COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR'S BIOGRAPHY

Command Sgt. Major Hershel L. Turner is a native of Lawton, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1979 as a 13B Cannon Crewmember. He completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, under One Station Unit Training (OSUT).

Command Sergeant Major Turner has held every leadership position in the Army from Howitzer Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant and Chief of Firing Battery, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major to Command Sergeant Major. His assignments include: Gunner and Howitzer Section Chief, B Battery 2nd Battalion, 18th Field Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Howitzer Section Chief, A Battery 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery, Schweinfurt, Germany; Howitzer Section Chief, A Battery 2nd Battalion, 34th Field Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Drill Sergeant, B Battery 1st Battalion, 19th Field Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Gunnery Sergeant, B Battery 2nd Battalion, 11th Field Artillery, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Chief of Firing Battery, A Battery, 2nd Battalion, 11th Field Artillery, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; First Sergeant, A Battery 4th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery, Fort Polk, Louisiana; First Sergeant, Headquarters, and Headquarters Service Battery 2nd Battalion, 2nd Field Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Sergeant Major, 3rd Battalion, 30th Field Artillery, Fort Sill Oklahoma; Senior Military Instructor, ROTC, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio; Operations Sergeant Major, 10th Mountain Division Artillery, Fort Drum, New York, Command Sergeant Major, 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery, Fort Drum, New York; Command Sergeant Major for the 25th Infantry Division Artillery Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. His last assignment prior to Command Sergeant Major, Cadet Command, was as the Post Command Sergeant Major for White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal (7th award), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officers' Development Ribbon with numeral 4, Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral 2.

His military and civilian education include Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, Primary Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Drill Sergeant School, Air Assault School, Master Fitness School, First Sergeant Course, and the Sergeants Major Academy. He has earned his Associates Degree in General Studies at Pikes Peak Community College.

MISSION

The U.S. Army Cadet Command commissions officers to meet the Army’s leadership requirements; and provides a citizenship program that motivates young people to be strong leaders and better citizens.
